Lunch, Kiwi style

Posted by kylie (Shanghai, China) on 16 April 2009 in Food & Cuisine and Portfolio.

One of the questions I get asked most often in China is "what kind of food do New Zealander's like to eat?". I find this question incredibly difficult to answer, mostly because I dont think New Zealanders have one particular style of food but rather an amalgam of styles that is the result of the many immigrants who now call our country home. That said, when I was back home for 2 weeks I made a huge effort to eat "Kiwi" food, i.e. food that is particularly special in NZ and that I just cant get here in China. This was a wonderful platter lunch I had at Godley house pub in Diamond Harbour near Christchurch. Two of us tried to eat it and failed spectacularly - it was just too much for us!

The platter included:
3 different breads
4 different meats and sausages
fresh and smoked salmon
tuna
green lipped mussels
blue cheese and brie
tomato chutney and basil pesto (NZers LOVE basil pesto - i really noticed that it seems to be included in everything!)
gerkins and pickled onions
2 types of olives
pickled cucumber (i think, not really sure what that was)
mini pretzels
Small rice crackers
