Shanghai's dynamic duo

Shanghai's two tallest buildings:

The Jin Mao tower on the right stands at 420.5 meters or 93 storeys high and was completed in 1998. These days it ranks as the world’s fifth tallest building.

The building on the left (the one that looks like a giant bottle opener) is the Shanghai World Financial Center. The angle of this photo is misleading, as it is actually the taller of the two buildings. Construction was completed in 2008 and it's 101 floors stand 492 metres from top to bottom. It was intended to be the world's tallest building, but during construction it was overtaken by the Taipei 101 building which due to its huge spire on top is just 16 meters taller. The hole in the top of this building is to allow it to withstand severe winds. Its viewing platform is the highest outdoor observation platform in the world and the Park Hyatt within its walls is now the world's highest hotel...
