Genmaicha

One of the really great things about living in China is all the tea you can try here. There seems to be an endless variety but I am doing my best to try them all! A friend recently went to Japan and brought this back for me - its Genmaicha, also known as Japanese popcorn tea. It is a mixture of green tea and roasted brown rice. The brown rice sometimes pops during roasting and resembles popcorn, hence the name. It has a kind of nutty, roasty flavour which comes from the rice. This type of tea was originally drunk by poor Japanese, as the rice served as a filler and reduced the price of the tea; today it is very popular with all segments of society.
